Aye Eye!

22nd September begins Eye Health Week and your eyes see so much more…

Did you know that during routine eye tests, many health conditions can be identified that otherwise may have gone undetected? The eye is often considered a window into a person's overall health, and optometrists and ophthalmologists are trained to recognise signs of various health conditions during an eye examination.

Eye tests can detect diabetes where the blood vessels in the eyes show signs of damage caused by high blood sugar levels, indicating diabetes or the need for further testing. Additionally, high cholesterol can also be detected through the appearance of yellowish deposits around the eyes. Eye tests can also identify signs of hypertension, or high blood pressure or even imminent stroke, through changes in the blood vessels in the retina. This can be critical in diagnosing and managing this silent but potentially dangerous condition. Eye tests can even reveal the presence of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis!

Glaucoma can be spotted, if untreated it can lead to progressive vision loss. Early detection of glaucoma through routine eye exams is crucial for preserving vision and preventing further damage to the optic nerve. Eye tests can also detect rare eye cancers.

Don’t skip those eye tests!
