Skills for life

The 1st Fazeley Scout Group are opening a new Scout Troop. This is for boys and girls aged 10 to 14 and they are holding an open event on Wednesday 21 February at Fazeley Town Hall, Lichfield Street, Fazeley. B78 3QN from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. For further information, please contact Andy Bennett at sl@1stfazeleyscouts.org.uk or on 07565925220. The reason for opening a new Scout Troop is because Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10) are enjoying themselves and want to move to the next section.

Scouts provides “skills for life" for boys and girls aged 10 to 14. Those skills range from leadership to teamwork, social skills to self-confidence and problem solving to responsibility. Activities Scouts can get involved with include caving, kayaking, geocaching, local knowledge, first aid, media relations, camping, pioneering, martial arts and science. In a recent survey, 88% of Scouts said they had tried activities they hadn’t tried before.

With waiting lists for children and young people to join, there is a need for more volunteers. All local Groups are run by volunteers. In a recent survey, 70% of Scout volunteers said they had improved their life satisfaction. Adults looking to volunteer are also invited to attend the open event.

Adult volunteer Stuart Wust said, “Volunteering is flexible, and we would find you a role to fit the time you wish to give. Whether it’s working with young children, teenagers, as a trustee or doing a role in the background, we would find you a role where you can put your skills to good use and have lots of fun.”
