State of the Union

by Perry Deakin

As we head into the finishing straight of the 2023/24 season, let’s take a look at our local clubs, where they stand and what we can expect between now and May.

Aston Villa

Emery’s revolution seemed to have hit the buffers a few weeks ago.  Consecutive defeats against Newcastle, Chelsea (FA Cup) and Manchester United had Villa supporters wondering if the clubs charge towards the top 4 and Champions League qualification was about to die a slow and painful death – particularly with more injuries hitting key players.

However; much improved performance in defeat against Man Utd, plus a similar performance and victory away to Fulham seems to have reignited players and fans alike.

Prediction – Champions League qualification.

Birmingham City

Although hovering too close to relegation positions after a dreadful run for manager Wayne Rooney, hopes were raised by the ex-England strikers sacking and appointment of the ‘steady’ Tony Mowbray to lead the club.

However, Mowbray’s sudden, temporary departure due to a serious medical condition has Blues fans panicking again and wondering whether anything else can go wrong this year as new owners look to drive the club forwards.

Prediction – Safety and a tilt towards promotion next season.

West Bromwich Albion

All of the news surrounding West Brom seems to have revolved around owner Lai Guochuan this season and his alleged mismanagement of club finances.

However, news that the club had been taken over by Shilen Patel and his father Kiran, means that focus for fans can now concentrate upon on-field matters and Abion have quietly established themselves in the top-6 as we head towards the end of the season

Prediction – Play-Offs.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Gary O’Neil has done a fabulous job since taking the reins at Molineux.

He has steered the club towards mid table, impressing everyone within the game, which makes Bournemouth’s decision to fire him in 2023 even more perplexing.

Prediction – 10th place finish and competing for top 8 next season

WalsallA generally disappointing season for the boys from The Poundland Stadium.

Hopes of a promotion push faded pretty early into the season and although not in danger of entering a relegation fight, supporters will be hoping for much better next season.

Prediction – 14th place finish.

Tamworth

A very special mention should be dedicated to Tamworth FC who have taken the National League North division by storm and currently sit top with a 12 point lead against second place Scunthorpe.

Great job by everyone involved!

Prediction – Champions – back where they belong!
