That's Entertainment

Don’t let a dreary January get you down. Use the opportunity to snuggle up in front of the TV and get lost in a world of entertainment, or put on some tunes and dance away the dark days. Here’s what we’re looking forward to this New Year!…

Film: Society of the Snow,

dir. J. A. Bayona (Netflix)

Anyone who has seen the 1993 film ‘Alive’ will be familiar with the story of the 1972 flight 571 from Uruguay, chartered to fly the national rugby team to Chile. After encountering difficulties it crashed in the Andes. Of the 45 people onboard only 29 survived and trapped in one of the most inaccessible and harsh environments in the world they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. This fresh retelling is a wild true story of survival and human endeavour!

TV: True Detective - Night Country

dir. Issa López (HBO)

The highly anticipated return of the True Detective franchise starts this month! There is a big tonal shift this time as the story is set in a fictional town in Alaska and follows the investigation of the disappearance of 8 men from a snow-bound research station. The two lead detectives are played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis and the series is directed by Issa López, the prolific Mexican film director and producer. Expect more twists and turns than a room full of salsa dancers!

Music: Future Islands “People Who Aren’t There Anymore”

(available January 2024, streaming)

It’s been three years since the previous album from the Baltimore art-pop group. Vocalist Sam Herring has been busy since then with a host of collaborative performances appearing on records by artists as diverse as Algiers, Billy Woods and Height Keech. The band are back together though for this new release, ‘People Who Aren’t There Anymore’, and if the singles that they’ve release so far are anything to go by, fans of the band will be treated to more of their infectiously catchy synth-rock. Check out the single “The Tower” on YouTube for a flavour of what’s to come.

We hope you enjoy our January selections!
