Film: Orlando, My Political Biography (dir. Paul B. Preciado) Cinemas from 5th July.

Taking Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando: A Biography as its starting point,  filmmaker Paul B. Preciado has fashioned the documentary, Orlando: My Political Biography, as a personal essay, historical analysis, and social manifesto which premiered and took home four prizes at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. For almost a century, Woolf’s eponymous hero/heroine has inspired readers across physical and spiritual metamorphoses over a 300-year lifetime. Preciado casts a diverse cross-section of more than twenty individuals in the role of Orlando as they perform interpretations of scenes from the novel, weaving into Woolf’s narrative their own stories of identity and transition. Not content to simply update a seminal work, Preciado interrogates the relevance of Orlando in the continuing struggle for equality and rights.

Music: Remi Wolf: Big Ideas, (Island)

This second studio album from American singer and songwriter Remi Wolf from Palo Alto, California is one with definitive summer vibes. Remi’s single “Cinderella” is a pop-funk party track with brass backing that cheer her along as she offers this playful number.

“‘Cinderella’ is a lyrical collage of the ups and downs and mood swings and transient lifestyle I was experiencing while writing this album.” says Remi “Constant travel and rapid changes led me to feel such a rollercoaster of emotion—moving from feeling really insecure to feeling really good to feeling manic and depressed and then feeling OK again, while desperately craving a grounding figure to tell me I was doing a good job. So, this song was me stepping in as my own fairy godmother telling myself that I was in control.” As for the instrumental, she added, “I wanted the song to have a sense of ’70s nostalgia while still feeling like a record made today. And I wanted to make something where you can’t help but dance and move and feel good while listening.”
